EOU Native American Program Intern

Native American Program Intern — RFP

Overview: Assist EOU Native American Program (NAP) Advisor with outreach, recruitment, retention and success programming. The NAP Student Assistant will play a vital role in developing a University led outreach, retention and success programing to bridge the opportunity and achievement gap for Tribal students through culturally responsive and data driven practices.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work one on one with the EOU NAP Advisor daily on various operational/administrative projects and events
  • Assist in targeted recruitment and retention efforts with local/regional community-based organizations serving historically under-represented populations navigate college and career success
  • Coordinate requests from the public in person or over the phone and respond as needed
  • Coordinate with local, regional and national networks to research, analyze and produce a college and career success program responsive to existing University Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs).
  • Provide support in data collection, analysis and reporting of outreach and events
  • Provide support in creating materials for NAP social media regarding promotion/retention
  • Maintain professional demeanor at all times and accept the department of Eastern Oregon University’s mission, values, and goals. As such, you will be able to demonstrate a commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, and inclusion
 
Eligibility Requirements:
  • Attending EOU (on campus or online) an enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credits
  • In good academic standing
 
Skills and Selection Criteria:
  • Experience navigating and working with Tribal-based, community-based or non-profit agencies
  • Experience working with historically under-represented student populations
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills in working with both colleagues, students, and the public
  • Strong writing and organization abilities
  • Prior work in an office or similar work environment preferred, but not required
  • Professional work ethic and independent time management skills
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to respond quickly
  • Flexibility and positive attitude about working in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge on Google docs, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
 
Potential Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a work product, through events and projects associated with the operations of the EOU Native American Program such as coordinating events in conjunction with EOU Student Diversity & Inclusion Department, Speel-Ya Native American Club, The Indian Arts Program, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Spokane Tribe, and other external educational and service stakeholders
  • Students will be able to develop on interpersonal skills, through writing and in-person communication by working with a variety of people
  • Students will learn the key components of working in a team environment, and how to accomplish action items through an effective and timely process
  • Students will learn tools and develop effective skills in order to work autonomously, and problem-solve in a fast paced environment.
  • Students will build on time management skills, while producing a great product
  • Students will gain knowledge on the components of successful office and database management
 
 
Pay and Hours:
  • EOU NAP Student Intern will be paid $12.40 per hour not to exceed 130 hours per term
 
Goals
Meet with NAP Advisor weekly
Coordinate with SDI/NAP Staff 
Present Progress Reports to Supervisors each term 
Contribute to the NAP Newsletter

  • Summer Term: Introduction to NAP
  • Read suggested articles/books about Native Americans in Higher Education
  • Familiarize on subjects & terms relating to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  • Create a task list for the year to build off of.
  • Create an outlined plan on talking to high school students about the NAP Program
  • Fall Term: Connecting
  • Connect with a High School in Eastern Oregon. Coordinate the visit, meet and talk with high school students about the NAP Program.
  • Create weekly social media posts to promote the program. 
  • Winter Term:
  • Collaborate with the EOU Health and Sciences Department to bring a Native American/Alaskan Native health professional to campus.
  • Spring Term: Professional level work
  • Connect with a High School in Eastern Oregon. Coordinate the visit, meet and talk with high school students about the NAP Program.
  • Create a project around NAP Graduates

EOU Interns are not permitted to be employed elsewhere on-campus as an employee unless they are utilizing Federal Work-Study funding.

EOU Interns will be required to attend quarterly EOU Career Services programming and training as a pathway to enhance career readiness, equity and networking skills.
