Student Diversity & Inclusion Outreach Program Coordinator Internship


POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Office of Student Diversity & Inclusion (SDI) at Eastern Oregon University supports
the Multicultural Center, the Native American Program, and the International Student
Services programs. SDI offers annual programs and events for students, faculty, and
staff that promote and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus.

Our programming aims to not only foster a strong sense of cultural responsiveness and a
sense of belonging to a community for our students, but it also strives to offer
experiential learning opportunities for our students by encouraging and supporting them
to participate and engage in student groups and activities and volunteering at SDI-
sponsored events. Some examples of SDI programming include: Celebrate, Educate,
and Appreciate Diversity (C.E.A.D.) conference; ¡Conéctate!, a one-day gathering of
community members and leaders serving our Latinx communities in Eastern Oregon;
and various cultural celebrations of student affinity groups (Navigator’s Club,
International Student Association, Speel-Ya). SDI also celebrates heritage months
(Martin Luther King Jr., Native American) by hosting diversity events and conversations.

To complement EOU’s efforts to support intercultural competency, inclusiveness, and
diversity on campus, the International Student Services program offers study away
programs, both abroad and domestically, to our students.

The Outreach Program Coordinator will assist SDI staff with programs and events,
supporting various aspects of program development, implementation, and evaluation.
The position will also assist with promoting and marketing EOU’s Study Away programs
to students and faculty. The Outreach Program Coordinator will report directly to SDI Director Bennie Moses-Mesubed and Assistant Director Mika Morton.

SKILLS & SELECTION CRITERIA:
  • Experience working with under-served populations and communities
  • Project management skills
  • Comprehensive communication skills

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Attending EOU (on campus or online) an enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credits
  • In good academic standing


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work with SDI staff and peers/student groups on campus to promote SDI programs and events.
  • Serve as an advocate and liaison for students ensuring that all issues and opinions are addressed, and resolutions are made, inclusive to their social identities (race, ethnicity, age, socio-economic status, gender, sexual orientation, religion).
  • Conduct and Schedule meetings with student leaders to promote the mission and goals of the SDI, recruit and help train volunteers for events
  • Serve as a resource and mentor for students who are struggling with issues involving social identity and cultural differences as well as areas of personal or community-based conflicts.
  • Work with ASEOU-Director of Diversity Affairs to address concerns, advocate for students and coordinate multicultural and social justice programs on campus
  • Collaborate with the Student Diversity & Inclusion programs, ASEOU, student organizations, and university departments on program initiatives around social justice and diversity.
  • Serve as a Co-Chair for the annual Celebrate, Educate & Appreciate Diversity Conference and ¡CONECTATE! Planning Committee. Working with campus departments, student volunteers and committees to plan, coordinate, organizing facilities and details such as catering, workshop themers/content, logistics, promotional material etc.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with and aid and support for first-year students (focus on a smooth transition, acclimation and a sense of belonging).
  • Meet weekly with a new student and correspond in between through phone call, e-mail, text messaging; whichever mode of communication is agreed upon to continue support and help students connect to campus engagement, support and resources.
  • Participate in training, programs and activities; and eventually help facilitate student leader trainings on diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Represent and participate in Mountaineer & Preview Day events and activities when necessary on behalf of SDI departments.
  • Other duties pertaining to SDI initiatives, recruitment and retention as needed and as assigned.

POTENTIAL LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Student will be able to organize databases (event registrations) and draft reports for SDI and event planning committees
  • Student will build strong time-management skills
  • Student will learn effective communication (written and oral) strategies through attending planning committee meetings
  • Student will learn to develop public communication skills through classroom presentations
  • Students will learn about programs and experience connection with university staff, fellow students, and the EOU Campus; will learn to solve problems, make difficult decisions and think critically about issues that arise at work.
  • Students who participate in the programs will feel welcomed, supported, and safe.
  • Students who participate in the programs will experience the positive impact of health and wellness in their lives.

Pay and Hours:
  • EOU NAP Student Intern will be paid $12.40 per hour not to exceed 130 hours per term


EOU Interns are not permitted to be employed elsewhere on-campus as an employee unless they are utilizing Federal Work-Study funding.

EOU Interns will be required to attend quarterly EOU Career Services programming and training as a pathway to enhance career readiness, equity and networking skills.
